THE LISBON MARU MANIFEST

A two-year effort led by Steve Denton, in support of the establishement of a permanent Lisbon Maru Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in the UK, estabished that there were exactly 1,816 men still on board the vessel when it left Hong Kong - exactly as the Japanese had stated. This research also aided the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in making a few necessary changes to their records.

Continuing the research until liberation, it was confirmed that 828 men had died in and around the sinking, with a a further 228 losing their lives as Prisoners of War in Japan, or on the way home after the war.
